Case Study

Heritage Gasometer Condition Inspection

What was needed?

Our client is a UK based award-winning heritage specialist, consulting across a wide range of sectors and assets. Its specialisms include heritage engineering, off-site fabrication, appraisal of existing buildings, refurbishment and repair, infrastructure engineering, engineering sustainability, pre-planning advice and deep basement design.

The client’s engineers had been tasked with assessing heritage gasometers by 2 large nationwide gas companies for quantifying the life of the structures as part of a national scheme to deconstruct 110 gasometers nationwide within the next ten years and the priority they must be ordered in.

Generally, this inspection was carried out with Mobile Elevation Works Platforms or by a ground-based engineer with binoculars. Neither of these methods allow engineers access to the internal frame and some, due to the proximity of open submerged gas pits and overhead electrical lines, were considered too dangerous for either type of inspection.

What did we do?

We needed to provide precision aerial inspection systems that were resistant to the interference of large metal structures and overhead power lines while maintaining flight for the duration of the survey. Located in heavily congested areas, we needed to make an advanced safety case, using our stringent operational procedures to allow complete, safe data capture.

All 28m by 60m and all 20m by 20m high stanchions were inspected in their entirety both on the external and internal sides as well as both above and below each horizontal structural beam section.

The outcomes

We collected high-definition video footage, 36mp still images and thermal imaging to visualise sitting water on the structures. Data that was previously impossible to capture was delivered in a result that was above the client’s expectations.

Our client was able to deliver highly detailed reports to their own clients through our custom Texzone Portal, which allows easy distribution of data to all levels of the organisation as well as easier project interaction and communication.
